Heat and Hormones: 10 Ways to Cool Off in the Summer During Pregnancy

Being pregnant during the summer months can be uncomfortable. Is that the understatement of the century? Maybe. Pregnancy can cause a naturally higher body temperature as a result of the increased blood flow, metabolism, and hormones, so adding the heat and humidity of summer can make putting regular clothes on and walking outside one of the last things you want to do.

Here are 10 things you can do to stay cool and comfortable this summer:

  1. Stay hydrated.

    This is a given, but it’s worth the first spot. Buy a massive re-usable water bottle with a straw top and drink, drink, drink. We recommend the Hydro Jug. It’s a half gallon bottle designed to help you drink the water you need in a day.

  2. Get. In. Water.

    The pool, the kiddy pool, the gym pool, the public pool, the bath. The weightless feeling you get while in a pool (maybe not the kiddy pool) can ease pressure and pain in joints. Take a swim! It’s a low impact exercise, meaning it’s perfect for your joints and muscles. You don’t have to do laps, but floating, treading, and relaxing in the water will do the trick of cooling you down. If you don’t have a pool or don’t want to go to the public pool, grab a Minidip pool found at your local Target. It fits adults, isn’t expensive, and looks great. Win win win.

  3. Keep a cool head.

    Using cold, wet cloths before, during, and after exercise helps keep your temperature manageable and comfortable while you sweat it out. If you’re spending the day outside, use a hand-held fan that sprays mist. They’re magical. 

  4. The early bird gets the worm.

    If you exercise outside, do so in the morning when the temperature is lower. You’ll have less of a chance to suffer heat exhaustion and dehydration. Decrease swelling after exercise by elevating your legs and feet.

  5. Embrace summertime food.

    Swap hot coffee for iced coffee, soup for a smoothie. Your body produces more heat when you consume warm food and drink. Some naturally cooling foods with high water content include watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, and lettuce. Avoid hot foods and beverages when you can. 

  6. Go pantsless.

    Exchange pants and shorts, for light, breathable dresses. For the comfort of you and baby, you have permission to buy more dresses. 

  7. Ice packs in your panties.

    We’re kidding. Don’t do this. Unless that sounds incredible, then go for it.

  8. Become a recluse.

    Okay kidding again, but really… If you don’t need to go out when it’s miserable outside, don’t. Close the blinds. Shut the curtains. Put a fan on. Allow yourself to rest and stay inside.  

  9. Put it up.

    In the Shenandoah Valley and in the Northern Virginia area, we are no strangers to humidity and the havoc it can wreak on our hair. Put your hair in a bun, ponytail, or braids. Get it off your neck and out of the way.

  10. Eat a frozen treat.

    If you’re not dealing with any pregnancy conditions like gestational diabetes, enjoy some ice cream or froyo this summer. As the saying goes, everything in moderation. It’s okay to indulge an ice cream craving this summer every once in a while. If you are dealing with GD and desperate for a treat, you’ll need to do your due diligence in researching sugar-free ice creams that are okay to eat.  Halo Top is a great alternative that can be enjoyed in moderation and is found at your local grocery store.

Whether you’re in the first trimester or third, summertime can be more miserable than it is magical. Staying cool and dry can require a bit more work than usual. Incorporate a few of these tips into your lifestyle and hopefully, you’ll be able to enjoy these warmer seasons of summer and pregnancy.
